Introduction |
Demo Chronicles is an amalgamation of two previous websites dating back to 2001. The primary website at the foundation of this project is
GL Chronicles, which was (and continues to be) hosted on the free Tripod servers. GL Chronicles explored (in a limited way) the use of OpenGL for producing real-time computer "film shorts" or "demos".
The first incarnation of the present site used the title GL Chronicles to reflect the continuity of these two projects. In 2009 this site underwent a name change first to DS Chronicles (Demo Scene) and then to just Demo Chronicles to
reflect a new emphasis on producing Demo Scene level productions. As well, the name change deemphasized OpenGL as the main api for demo programming so as to accommodate demos produced using any 3D API for any platform.
The second website that Demo Chronicles inherits content from is the OpenGL Challenge. This website was run by OTri between 1999 - 2001, who hosted a weekly OpenGL competition where participants created
demo entries based on a predetermined theme. All of the releases from this competition are now located in the Challenge Archive. Many of these releases have also been converted
to .avi movies and uploaded to YouTube. You can find them on Proximal Studios' YouTube Channel.
In its current iteration, Demo Chronicles is a website that is intended to act as a portal to the demo scene. It is built around a mentoring system where new demo coders (apprentices) have the opportunity to learn from accomplished demo programmers (mentors). This relationship is achieved by providing a venue (the Demo Challenge) for producers of all abilities to create demos in a fun environment and to present their products to the community for comment. Because the release of all possible source code for each demo is expressly required of each producer as a condition for their participation in the Demo Challenge, demo coders have
the opportunity to learn new coding techniques by examining the source code from previously released demos. As new producers gain confidence in their skills, they will in turn become mentors themselves.
Some of the rationale for creating this website lies with the fact that demo coding can be very competitive to the point where emerging demo producers are hesitant to showcase their latest product for fear that they
will be ridiculed by their more accomplished peers. For demo coders who have developed considerable skill sets (artisans) but who are insecure about how their products will be received by their peers, the demo challenge
provides a low-risk venue for showcasing their talent without fear of their demo "being ripped apart on Pouet". See the main page for Demo Chronicles to learn more about this regular event.
